Paediatric First Aid

  • Twelve hours (2 days) or Six hours (1 day)

This course can be either two days face-to-face or one day distance learning one day face-to-face. We can provide training at your site or, if required, off-site.

Paediatric First Aid

  • At least one person who has a current paediatric first aid (PFA) certificate must
    be on the premises and available at all times when children are present and must
  • accompany children on outings. The certificate must be for an entire course consistent
  • PFA training must be renewed every three years and be relevant for people caring for young children and babies.
  • Taking into account any advice from the LSP or local authority on appropriate training courses.
  • Providers are responsible for identifying and selecting a competent training provider to deliver their PFA training.
  • All staff who obtained a level 2 and/or level 3 qualification since 30 June 2016 must obtain a PFA qualification within three months of starting work to be included in the required staff: child ratios at level 2 or level 3 in an early years setting.
  • The certificate must be renewed every three years to continue to be included in the ratio requirement.

Course Content: Paediatric First Aid

  • Be able to assess an incident involving an Infant and Child.
  • Be able to manage an Infant or Child who is unresponsive and NOT breathing normally.
  • Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive and breathing normally Infant and Child.
  • Be able to manage an Infant and Child who is having a seizure.
  • Recognise and assist an Infant and Child who is choking.
  • Manage an Infant and Child with external bleeding.
  • Manage an Infant and Child who is in shock (from severe blood loss).
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a First Aider.
  • Be able to administer first aid to an Infant or Child suffering from an anaphylactic shock.
  • Manage an Infant and Child who have had an electric shock.
  • Know how to provide first aid to an Infant or Child with burns or scalds.
  • Be able to provide first aid to an Infant and Child with a suspected fracture or dislocation.
